About the project

VikingDome™ was attending in this project proposal tender with a designing bearing structures and facade cladding. Since this stadium is in already urbanized area height limit was a huge concern. The client wanted to get as much usable floor space as possible to get most of this multi-purpose stadium. With our structural solutions, long spans without columns can be achieved and in this case from 5 up to 10 meters of buildings height could have been saved. This also involves using fewer facade materials and saving on heating and conditioning costs due to less volume. This project proposal took second place.

The idea of the project

The Daugava River is an example of natural development, the sun is a source of life, and the thunder is a force. The construction boundaries of the city “Daugava central square” (for the Daugava central square) form the city blocks, which are like tributaries of the river, flowing into the Daugava River.
The planning of quarters is based on the traditions of the regions: Vilnia, Sėlija, Kuržėė and Latgalės.

The identity of the district of Grizinkalns is Grīziņkalns sandy mountain. The shape of the sand-fogged sandy river of Daugava forms the backbone of the park. The quarters of the stadium were used for the grounds of the park of Grīziņkalns Park and the new “sandstone”.
The sand hills, forming the land of Hausmani bog, are formed by four forces: the Daugava, the sun, the thunderstorms of wind and sea waves. The conception of the near-smooth transfer of the environment through the development of the stadium is inspired by J. Brocė’s drawing “Smilšu kalni pie Hausmanas purvs” (“Sand hills near Hausmanis bog”) (1700).
