Glass for facades and roofs

One can easily say that glass becomes the king of modern day architecture. With every day, more and more innovations are brought in to the stage, widening the possibilities and use of glass. Even smart and renewable resource technologies have changed their approach on how the glass can be adapted.

Previously, the use of glass was restricted by the lack of sun control solutions, high heat loss through glass partitions because of this material’s high heat transfer coefficient and possible overheating of the premises. The relatively high weight of glass coverings has also presented a challenge to the design of supporting structures.

Safe and reinforced glass

Tempered glass

Tempered glass – 4 to 20 mm thick. This type of glass is used whenever additional safety and glass durability is required. Tempered glass can be used both in single-layer systems and glass packets. The glass is tempered by quickly heating and cooling it down. This process makes the glass approximately 5 times more durable. One of the main characteristics of tempered glass is its safety in case it breaks. The tempered glass breaks up to form small cube shape bits and pieces without any sharp edges, therefore protecting people from being hurt.

Laminated safe glass

Elastic transparent film is fit between two layers of glass. In case the glass is broken, the shards stay stuck to the film and do not fall down. Additionally, the film between the glass layers adds additional rigidity to the construction. Laminated safe glass is used in single-layer constructions or glass packet systems to ensure the people’s safety.

Fireproof reinforced glass

Fireproof glasses are usually used in partitions and doors. In case of a fire, the fireproof glass keeps its properties intact a lot longer than usual glass and does not allow the fire to spread from one premise to others. A metal mesh is inserted in the middle of the glass.

Heated glass

The heating function can be added to both single-layer glass façades and glass packet systems.
There are three heated glass packet options:

  • Externally heated glass for snow melting;
  • Internally heated glass for condensation control;
  • Two-side glass packet heating system.

Opaque glass

Electrochromic glasses allow controlling the passing of light through the use of a simple switch (managed through the Android or Orbolis app). The glass contains a small mesh in it, which can be controlled through the use of a small electrical current to change the crystal structure of the glass, therefore making it less transparent to light. A great choice whenever there is no possibility to install internal or external sun control elements.

UV ray control glass

The glass is covered with a special film, which performs the UV ray control function. The heating radiation is reduced together with the harmful UV effect.

ETFE facades and skylights

ETFE is one of the hard polymers used in modern-day constructions. The first industrially produced ETFE was used in NASA projects, and after that, it was adopted by the commercial construction sector because of its special properties.

    • Long service life.
    • The surface is particularly smooth and slippery, dirt and show will slide down.
    • High light transmittance (from 90% to 95%).
    • ETFE films tear resistance: 42 Pa (6100 psi).
    • Elasticity: 600% from the initial state to tear.
    • Operating temperature: from -185 ° C to +150 ° C (-300 ° F to +300 ° F).
    • The thickness of a single pillow layer is from 20 to 300 microns.
    • Makes up only for 1 per cent of the glass weight, therefore does not require such massive constructions.

    • Special printing on ETFE film is possible for extra light control.

    Transparent hard polymer ETFE film can be used as single-layer material or as a pneumatic two or three-layer “pillow”. The films are connected at their perimeters and are filled with air. ETFE “pillow” system is them connected by tubes to the central air compressor, which regulates the “pillow” surface tension, depending from the snow or wind load. ETFE segments are attached to the metal carcass. A great material for large size construction façades and roods or exceptional design architectural solutions.


    Polycarbonate is a lot more durable and almost twice as light as usual glass. It is very hit-resistant, does not crack and is hard to break, therefore can be accounted as an anti-vandal material, it also has good acoustic properties. Additional surface coverings provide polycarbonate with resistance to various sunlight spectrum rays. Surface covering with colored or mirrored films or factory covers is also possible.

    Polycarbonate advantages:

    • Easily shaped and treated;
    • Temperature fluctuation resistant (can be used in all climate zones);
    • Hit-resistant;
    • Lighter than glass;
    • Possible polycarbonate combinations are possible (darkening, UV ray control, colored polycarbonate).

    Tensile textile architecture

    Textile architecture is an unavoidable material whenever one needs to cover huge areas with limited covering weight. None other technologies can offer such a ratio between the pole distance and low weight. It is easy to shape in space by installing fixation point for stretching. Textile architecture is very widely used; therefore, many architects choose this covering. Please, do not confuse it with textiles for rain covers and canopies. Textile architecture uses reinforced PVC tent covering weighing 700-2000 gr/m2, it has high elasticity and mechanical resistance parameters.

    Tensile textile advantages:

    • Low own weight of covering;
    • Wide variety of colors;
    • Fast installation;
    • Possible seasonal use, easy disassembly for winter season;

    Double facade system ensures sun and climate control. Reinforced facade PVC mesh membrane is installed in segments. The net captures 50% of the sun, holds rain, snow and birds at bay. Can be closed or 50% breathable. Fireproof class B1, material’s own weight is 400-1000 gr/m2.

    Interior and sun control decisions at glass light window and roof areas are executed with the FLASHGUARD mesh PVC system. Dropped ceiling elements are installed inside the premises and protect from direct sunrays, create shade, improve the acoustic properties of the premises – reduce echo. Decrease expenses for premise ventilation. Own weight – 380 gr/m2.
